Infant Program

 

In the Infant Room, the goal is to create a calm and loving environment, meeting the child’s physical and spiritual needs by respecting the person that they are and the person that they will become through our touch and our speech. We like to try and keep the environment as peaceful as possible with calming music, soft voices, slow movements and materials that do not make loud noises, because Maria Montessori learned though her research and work with children that the very young child and infant are so easily over-stimulated. We strive to provide an encouraging, happy and loving environment where the child has complete freedom of movement to practice all his amazing developmental feats with joy and self-confidence.

A few activities that your child will be doing in the course of the day include watching his body movements in the floor mirror, reaching and grasping overhanging mobiles, working on rolling over, sitting up, crawling, exploring and manipulating toys and learning materials. These activities will answer questions they have like, “What is this?” “What can I make this do?” “What kind of sound can I make it produce?” and, of course, “How does this taste?” We will also be looking at books together, naming everything and working on language. We will sing finger play songs together, which they adore! As she gets older, we will encourage her to work with materials such as stacking and nesting cups, a shape-sorter, putting-in and taking-out/container work and stacking rings to help her develop focus, problem-solving skills, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Most importantly we will be making friends and enjoying playing and laughing together.
